MOUNT VERNON, VA — The home of George Washington, Mount Vernon, unveils a new furniture collection in partnership with Durham Furniture. Debuting in stores this September, The Cupola Collection comprises of 10 new furniture pieces, made of solid wood, which combine 18th century elegance with today’s need for functionality. The collection is inspired by one of the more iconic elements of George Washington’s home, the cupola, a famous architectural element from the Mansion.
The Cupola Collection is a relaxed and casual-traditional style in solid cherry and features two new distressed finishes – Olde Brandy and Olde Cherry. The key design component featured throughout the group is the custom hardware in antique brass developed from the Washington family cipher. The collection draws upon historic design elements of the cupola’s dentil moldings and pilasters.
“Mount Vernon uses history to inspire beautiful furniture,” said Beverly Addington, director of licensing for Mount Vernon. “The solid wood, made-in-North America story is a point of pride at Mount Vernon.”
In addition to launching a new collection, Durham has introduced two new key pieces to its existing George Washington: Architect Collection, a Palladian bed and Estate Organizer. The Palladian bed has an arched top headboard that echoes the profile of Palladio’s most popular window design, which Washington installed onto the Mansion’s large dining room. The Estate Organizer, based upon an 18th-century desk-on-stand in Mount Vernon’s collection, provides a place to keep it all organized, with drawers and pigeonholes, and a recharging station updated to accommodate the electronic essentials of modern communications.
